Design Tips

a lot goes into designing spaces

We want to make our homes look beautiful and clean without spending an arm & leg! With that being said, I want to share a few simple tips that can UP your decor game.

1. Throw pillows:

When grouping your throw pillows, use a variety of sizes and textures while sticking to the same color pallet. For example, you would choose a euro size for the back (24-26”) then a smaller 20” pillow to layer in front of that. Add a lumbar shape for a 3rd option. I prefer groupings of two or three. For texture, go with one simple pattern, one textured (hemp, velvet or fur) and then something simple and plain. By switching your throw pillows to feather inserts, you’ll acquire that cozy karate chop appearance. I like to size up 2-4” up on the feather insert to get that over-filled fluffy look. Fluffy pillows make the biggest difference in making your living room look cozy!

2. Kitchen counter decor:

Get that Kitchen aid mixer off your counter! I’m going to assume you don’t use it everyday, right? Put away those items that you don’t use daily if at all possible. Instead, keep it cute but still functional. Lean a cutting board up against your backsplash with some cookbooks and glass canisters. Glass is see-through, so it appears less bulky in your kitchen space but still serves a purpose. I also like to keep a little crock for cooking spoons next to my stove as well as a pretty dish with garlic cloves — again, cute and serves a purpose! Pretty salt and pepper grinders are great, too! If you receive some natural light in your kitchen, definitely include a plant as well; faux plants are great too.

3. Wall decor:

Try to incorporate your busy family photos (gallery wall) into a hallway or stairwell wall Vs. living room and main living spaces. I also try to stay off the TV wall when hanging frames or galleries. They can be very overwhelming to look at and make your space feel cluttered! Opt for black and white prints or large matting if your choose to have wedding/family photos out for all to see. This is a more timeless and clean way to display your beautiful photos.

4. Where to spend your money:

Personally, I always tell clients to spend the bulk of your budget on the furniture you’re going to sit on. You can definitely tell the difference in a cheap sofa vs. an expensive one for multiple reasons. Comfort being the main one, but also performance fabric! Splurge and get the performance fabric; it is SO worth the extra money. You guys, I have a white sofa and my red wine spill literally rolls right off! If that doesn’t convince you enough…The second place to spend money are on rugs in your main living space. If they receive a lot of traffic, you’re going to want quality.
Places you can save are pieces like end tables, decor, blankets, console tables, mirrors, lamps and so on.
